The New Normal
Mixed race couples in post-Apartheid society (Cape Town, 2010)
During my internship in Cape Town, I made this series about mixed couples. After the abolition of Apartheid, black, colored and white have to live in a rainbow nation. Cape Town is a progressive city, where young mixed couples have started to be a common street scene. This generation might still live in the aftermath of apartheid, however they are focused on the future and have their own ideas. Unfortunately, when they show their love outside the city, many people still disagree with their mix. Because of this ambiguity I portrayed them behind closed doors, safely inside their homes.
